Emotional check-in

Performamce, c.off. Stockholm
2020

The performance “Emotionel check-in” dealt with intimacy, closeness and communication seen through the current pandemic. The work sought to explore how we translate and understand through different states and technics, such as writing, speech, dance as well as the space between performance and documentation of the event.

The performance moved in between my own story about a trauma and my experience of losing my language (the ability to read and write) for a period of time. Staub responded via Skype, which was projected onto a screen. She answered me through both gesticulation, mumbling, clear speech, song and dance, in a fluent movement. I came and went from also writing on the vinyl floor of the dance studio with chalk – a text with moved between readable words and drawing.

An improvisational conversation started to take shape during the hour that the performance lasted, where the common, normal way of communicating, through grammatically correct sentences, was set aside for an improvisation where the body has just as much right to speak.
